GRAMMAR: Stative and Active Verbs
![]() |
In Unit 1 you learned how to use two different present tenses, the present simple and the present continuous, for different kinds of actions. But there are some verbs (called stative verbs) that are not used in continuous tenses because they express a permanent state rather than an action.
These are verbs of senses: feel, hear, see, smell, taste verbs of feelings: dislike, like, love, forgive, hate, prefer verbs of opinion: believe, understand, agree, suppose, think, know other verbs: appear, seem, belong, depend, have (possess), mean, own, want, look |
Use the words from the list to complete the sentences. There is one extra word.
1. They are cooking again. Can you ............. it?
3. I suppose he’s right. What do you ...........?
|
5. Do you ................. this house? No, I’m only staying here.
