Task 2 Wyjaśnienie/odkrycie
• Read this account of the plot: The Gunpowder Plot of 1605
In November 1605, the infamous Gunpowder Plot took place. The story is remembered each November 5th when ‘Guys’ are burnt in a celebration known as "Bonfire Night".
Catholics in England had expected James I to be a tolerant king. In fact, he acted just the opposite. This so angered some Catholics that they decided to kill everyone sitting in the Houses of Parliament including James I, who was going to open Parliament on November 5th, 1605. Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators, who had been renting out a house next to the Houses of Parliament, managed to get 36 barrels of gunpowder into a cellar of the House of Lords. The explosives expert, Guy Fawkes, had been waiting in the cellar to set off the fuse and he was only caught when a group of guards was checking the cellars at the last moment. Fawkes was arrested and sent to the Tower of London where he was tortured before he eventually gave away the names of the other conspirators. Some of the plotters were shot, others were caught, sent to the Tower and, after a brief trial, eventually hanged, together with Fawkes, in January 1606. To celebrate his survival, James ordered that the people of England should have a great bonfire on the night of November 5th. For years, people had been burning an effigy of the Pope, but after the failed plot, they changed it into Guy Fawkes and added fireworks. http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/gunpowder_plot_of_1605.htm dostęp: 18.07.2006 adapted from: The Gunpowder Plot of 1605

• Read and listen to Sophie speaking about how she celebrates November 5th:
“When we were children [A] we used to spend Bonfire Night with my parents’ friends. [B]They had a big garden. [C]We would gather all the dry leaves and anything that could be burnt and we would have a huge fire. Of course, our parents were always there. Nowadays, I just go out with my friends to watch the parade. Last year, when [D]I was sitting in a pub watching the parade through the window, [E]I saw Pierce Brosnan pass by, dressed as a pirate! He even waved to me! I wanted to take a photo but [F]I had broken my camera during the parade the previous year!” (tekst czytany, student widzi go)
