There are special rules for using articles with geographical and place names. Study the rules below, then fill in the gaps with the or no article as appropriate:
We use the definite article the with:
- rivers
- seas
- oceans
- groups of islands
- groups of mountains
We do NOT use an article with:
- cities
- streets
- squares
- islands
- continents
- roads
- parks
- mountains
- lakes
- countries
Note:
We use the with some country names:
- kingdoms, e.g. the United Kingdom (the UK)
- republics, e.g. the Czech Republic
- plural names, e.g. the United States of America (the USA)
- some other names, e.g. the Netherlands
