Progress Test - Units 5 & 6

You are going to hear a short description of a memorable event from the life of Jeff Bridges, an actor. Listen carefully and then finish the statements by choosing the right option (5 marks):

(tekst nagrany, niewidoczny dla studenta)
I don't know how it is for women or for other guys, but when I was young and in my 20s, I had a fear of marriage. I thought it was a giant step towards death. So I did everything in my power to resist it -- the idea was frightening to me, man. Then I met Susan Geston in 1974 while I was shooting the film Rancho Deluxe in Montana, up in Paradise Valley at Chico Hot Springs, and I thought, “Now, this is interesting”.

Susan, who was from Fargo, North Dakota, the daughter of a professional couple (an architect and a university professor), was waitressing at the time. She was doing whatever needed to be done at the ranch, and I noticed her right away. Not only was she beautiful, she had a broken nose and two black eyes. I had this fantasy that she'd been beaten up by a boyfriend and that I was going to save her. Actually, she had been in a car accident a few days earlier. I did what lots of guys do when they see a girl but don't want her to see them: I held up a magazine, looked over the edge, and then ducked back behind it when she walked by. It took me all day to finally get the nerve to ask her out. And she said no.

Just then, the make-up man on the film snapped a photo of the two of us. About 15 years ago, the guy sent it to me, saying, "Here you are asking a local girl for a date." He didn't know that that "local girl" became my wife. I still carry that photo around today. It's one of my most prized possessions.

Read the passage below and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F) according to the information in the text (10 marks):

Of Serotonin and Spirituality

Serotonin, the brain chemical crucial to mood and motivation, also shapes personality to make you susceptible to spiritual experiences. A team of Swedish researchers has found that the presence of a receptor that regulates general serotonin activity in the brain correlates with people’s capacity for transcendence, the ability to apprehend phenomena that cannot be explained objectively. Scientists have long suspected that serotonin influences spirituality, because drugs known to alter serotonin such as LSD also induce mystical experiences, but now they have proof from brain scans linking the capacity for spirituality with a major biological element.
The concentration of serotonin receptors normally varies markedly among individuals. Those whose brain scans showed the most receptor activity proved on personality tests to have the strongest predisposition to spiritual acceptance.
Reporting in the American Journal of Psychiatry, the researchers see the evidence as contradicting the common belief that religious behaviour is determined strictly by environmental and cultural factors. They see a biological underpinning for religiosity, and it is related to the neurotransmitter serotonin.
