HOW TO EXPRESS EMPHASIS?
Emphasis in spoken English can be expressed in different ways. Look at the following examples:
MIND YOU is often used in spoken English to express an afterthought i.e. to contradict what someone has said.
You cannot expect her to cook meals for you! Mind you she is only ten!
BY THE WAY is also used as an afterthought but more like a change of direction in the way of conversation
These are the letters for you. Oh, by the way there’s a telephone message for you.
HOWEVER is used to introduce a contrast.
You can make use of all the facilities in the office. However, you are not allowed to make private phone calls.
Another way of expressing emphasis in spoken English is by changes in pronunciation. The words which you want to enphasize are spoken with higher intonation. Repeating the words or what has been said is also a good way to focus somebody’s attention to what is being said.
Look at the examples and say the sentences, srtressing the words in bold:
I do like fish!
Hurray, I won the beauty contest! Really?
Give it BACK!
He lied to ME! (not someone else)
I AM telling the truth.
It was MUCH MUCH bigger.
Write a short dialogue (6-8 lines) using emphathic style, bring it to the class and act in front of the class.
