GRAMMAR: modal verbs – obligation and permission
MUST and HAVE TO
When it is necessary to do something, we use must and have to.
We use must when we express our personal feelings, for example if I say You must go now it means that I think so. If I say You have to go now, it means that there are other reasons for you to go.
You can use have to in all tenses. You can use must to talk about the present and the future.
You must go now.
You must see him tomorrow.
But you can’t use must to talk about the past. In the past tense you have to use had to.
I had to see him yesterday.
To make questions and negative sentences with have to, use do/does/did.
Do you have to go now?
Did you have to see him last night?
He doesn’t have to go to school any more.
