INDIRECT QUESTION
Read the second part of the interview with Keira Knightly from the Unit 1 Lesson 1, in which she talks about Orland Bloom and Johnny Depp. Change the interviewer’s questions into Reported Speech and write your questions in the numbered spaces provided, starting with the question word.
(1)UGO: How did you prepare for the kiss with Orlando Bloom at the end?
KK: A lot of studying. Yes, I went around kissing every boy that I could find.
(2) UGO: Are you shy on-camera, or does it come naturally to kiss Orlando on-camera?
KK: I think it comes naturally to kiss Orlando anywhere. I had no trouble with kissing him on-camera. He's a good-looking boy, why not?
(3) UGO: How many takes (were shot)?
KK: That took quite a lot of time, that scene, actually. [Whispers] We kept getting it wrong, isn't that weird? I don't know, maybe five to six, or four to five.
(4) UGO: How many takes were you willing to do?
KK: Lots and lots and lots!
(5) UGO: What did you think of Johnny Depp at work?
KK: There's no question (…) that he is one of the most talented actors around at the moment. He's courageous enough to absolutely go for this character in a completely unique way.
(6) UGO: What is Johnny like outside of character?
KK: (…) I can't say enough good things about Johnny. He's just a normal guy. But he can talk about absolutely anything. He's possibly one of the most intelligent, most well-read people I know. He's incredibly generous and just gorgeous.
(7) UGO: What did Johnny do to make you laugh?
KK: (…) He knows a lot about British comedy. Maybe from living in Europe for such a long time. It's such a humor that I grew up with, so we just clicked.

In the third part of the interview, Keira talked to Thomas Chau about her life after Pirates and outside acting. Notice that when addressing the actress, the reporter uses direct questions, though it is not uncommon to use indirect ones – which are considered more polite – when talking to a celebrity. Compare the reporter’s direct version of the first four questions and the indirect versions provided. Then, transform the remaining questions to their indirect equivalents and write them in the spaces provided below the text:
(1) UGO: Is your upcoming film King Arthur the same kind of swashbuckling adventure as Pirates?
Indirect question: Could you tell me if your upcoming film King Arthur is the same kind of swashbuckling adventure as Pirates?
KK: With King Arthur, we're trying to make a reality out of the myth. It's going to be very, very, very raw. It's going to be fascinating. There is a lot of action; I'm doing a lot of action. I get to swordfight, which I didn't do in Pirates.
(2) UGO: How are you training?
Indirect question: I’d like to know me how you are training.
KK: I'm doing boxing, sword-fighting, knife-fighting, axe-fighting, archery and horse-riding. I go through lots of personal trainers.
(3) UGO: Which of these is your favourite?
Indirect question: I wonder which of these is your favorite.
KK: Boxing. I'm loving it. I'm watching the fights now.
(4) UGO: Isn’t it a dangerous sport, though?
Indirect question: I wonder if it isn’t a dangerous sport.
KK: I haven't been doing it for real. I punch, and my [trainer] blocks. I didn't really get punched back, I don't fall onto the ground.
(5) UGO: Do you have any time for normal stuff like dating during all this movie-shooting?
KK: Hanging out with friends. I live pretty normal. I live in a suburb of London with mum and dad. I go on the bus. I shop in the local shopping centre.
(6) UGO: Do guys ask you out?
KK: No.
(7) UGO: Are there any attachments in your life?
KK: None that I'm going to mention. No, but I've never had anybody chat me up. So yes, I'm waiting with fainted breath for that to happen.
(8) UGO: How do you meet people, then? On movie-sets?
KK: Um, I guess that's the only option I’ve got.
(9) UGO: Would you want to date somebody from the industry?
KK: Oh, no. I wouldn't mind. I think as long as they make me laugh. That's the main thing. Oh, Johnny. He's the perfect person. But he's got two kids and he's practically married. Humor and talent, those are the best attributes.
(10) UGO: How do you feel about becoming the new Hollywood 'It' girl?
KK: I don't know. It's so here-today, gone-tomorrow. You never know what tomorrow's going to hold. But for now, it's great. I'm really enjoying the work. Beyond that, if I kind of make a career, if I can get a flat out of this, that's great. If not, I'll do something else.
(11) UGO: Do you see yourself moving to California?
KK: I can't see myself moving to California in the foreseeable future. Never say never, but I think you have to be very, very strong as an actress, and I'm not.
