GRAMMAR: there ... / it ...; have something done

Look at this picture of a room.

M1 u10 l1 1.jpg

Write 10 sentences about it, beginning with "There is..." or "There are..".

Example: There is a sofa in the room. There is a cushion on the sofa.

Look at these examples.

There are too many people. I’ll go some other time.

There is a lot of space in our new house. The kids love it!

There are many jobs around. You just have to look for them.

There is too much noise in my new office and I can’t really work.

There are five bedrooms in that house.

When you translate these examples into Polish, what word do you start with?

Jest za dużo ludzi...

Jest mnóstwo miejsca ...

Jest za duży hałas ....

Can you see the problem for the Polish learners? There seems to be one more word in English in this structure; similarly in the plural.

There are different ideas but we have to choose one.

różne pomysły ...

It becomes even more difficult when you look at these examples.

It’s warm today.

It’s a long way from here to the university.

It’s Friday.

It’s 2 o’clock.

In Polish the first word is jest again:

Jest ciepło ...

Jest daleko ....

Jest piątek.

Jest druga.

So it’s really important to understand the difference between there is and it is.

Look at those examples again and decide whether we use it or there when we talk about

distance

it

there

time

it

there

weather

it

there

the number of rooms in your house

it

there

not enough space in your room

there

When you start describing your house, your flat or your office, you may notice some problems that somebody else will have to solve for you. For example:

There are two printers in our office but none of them works properly. We must have them repaired.

There is an extra bedroom upstairs. We’ll have it renovated next month.

To have something done means to arrange for someone to do it for us.

We must have it repaired means that we must find someone to repair it for us.

We’ll have it renovated means that we’ll arrange for someone to renovate it for us.

If you say I’ll repair the printer you mean to do it yourself.

Look at this example.

Sue often washes her car but Tim always has his car washed.

Who does it herself/himself?

Sue

Tim

Who is too lazy and gets somebody else to do it for him/her?

Sue

Tim

Again for Polish learners this may be a bit confusing. In Polish you may say Muszę sobie przyciąć włosy even if you don’t mean to do it yourself. In English you have to say I must have my hair cut. If you say I have to cut my hair, people may start worrying about you!

Complete the sentences with the words from the list.

1. Julia had her car ................

built

cleaned

delivered

made

painted

pierced

redecorated

repaired

serviced

Now look at your room. Would you like to have something done in it? What’s wrong? What should be changed? Try to find 6 problems and explain what’s wrong and what should be done about them.

EXAMPLE:

The walls are dirty. I should have the room painted.

There is not enough space for books. I should have new bookshelves made.

Could you do anything yourself? Write 6 sentences.

EXAMPLE:

The walls are dirty but I’ll paint them myself.
